From Care Plans to Root Cause Analysis:  Integrating QSEN Competencies

Building on a strong faculty interest and commitment to evidenced-based teaching, this project proposes several innovative approaches to incorporating quality and safety competencies.  With respect to clinical teaching, one group of students in a cardiovascular intensive care setting will replace traditional nursing diagnoses with the QSEN knowledge, skills and attitudes when developing care plans.  Instructor evaluation tools will be modified to reflect these domains.  The quality improvement competency will be addressed in clinical experiences with root cause analysis activities ancd student-directed small change projects.  Development of a system level safety related video vignette is planned for faculty and student development preparing for an interprofessional learning exercise surrounding a sentinel event.
