At the core of nursing lies a rich, deep commitment to quality and safety for patients, but the acknowledged education/practice gap has serious implications.  The Quality and Safety Education for Nurses project addresses the challenge of preparing future nurses with the competencies to improve the quality and safety of health care systems in which they work.  This presentation discusses six core competencies and provides evidence of current integration of the competencies into nursing education programs.  Also, innovative strategies for clinical agencies will be presented.  This presentation is not more of the same but highlights the radical shift required to assure that nurses can practice safely and in a manner that supports continuous quality improvement in their work environments.
