Teaching Patient Safety and Clinical Judgment Using Multiple-Patient Simulation Experiences

This multi-site study, funded by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing, examines the impact of multiple-patient simulation experiences on the development of nursing students' patient safety competencies and clinical judgment in the final semester of their nursing program. Drawing on the QSEN project, selected knowledge, skill and attitude statements will comprise a scale by which students' practice will be assessed to determine if their practice in multiple-patient scenarios improves over time in relation to patient safety. This study also extends the Jeffries Simulation Model (2005) by investigating how student characteristics influence the outcomes achieved through simulation and the impact of simulation design on student outcomes. This project adds to the science of nursing education by providing an evidence-base for decision making regarding the uses of multiple-patient simulation experiences, the outcomes that can be achieved through simulation, the student factors that influence outcomes and the relationship between the design of simulation experiences and outcomes.
