Nurse Executive Certification Review Course FAQs

Registration in now open for the Nurse Executive Certification Exam Review Course (for both the basic and advanced certification exams), which is being offered October 31st-November 1st, 2019. See the attached flyer for more details.

Since this course was first announced, I have received many questions about the eligibility requirements for taking the Nurse Executive certification exam. After following up with ANCC and consulting their certification resources, I have listed answers to the questions most frequently asked. Attached are the reference documents. Please forward this email to additional nurse leaders who may be interested (internal or external).

Executive Nurse Leader Basic and Advanced Certification Review Course

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What are the eligibility requirements for taking the basic or advanced Nurse Executive Certification Exam? (all requirements must be completed prior to application for the exam)

A: Nurse Executive, Basic Exam

• Hold a current, active RN license in a state or territory of the United States or the professional, legally recognized equivalent in another country.

• Hold a baccalaureate or higher degree in nursing.

• Held an administrative position at the nurse executive level (nurse manager, supervisor, or higher levels), OR a faculty position teaching graduate students executive level nursing administration, for at least 24 months full time equivalent in the last five years.

• Have completed 30 hours of continuing education in nursing administration within the last three years. This requirement is waived if you have a master’s degree in nursing administration.

Nurse Executive, Advanced Exam

• Hold a current, active RN license in a state or territory of the United States or the professional, legally recognized equivalent in another country.

• Hold a master’s or higher degree in nursing, or hold a bachelor’s degree in nursing and a master’s in another field.

• Held an administrative position at the nurse executive level, OR a faculty position teaching graduate students executive level nursing administration, for at least 24 months full time equivalent in the last five years.

• Have completed 30 hours of continuing education in nursing administration within the last three years. This requirement is waived if you have a master’s degree in nursing administration

Q: Does my job qualify me for this exam?

A: Your job title might not match the title of the exam application, but you may be practicing in the role and specialty that exam tests. Please refer to the Test Content Outline (attached) for details and compare it to your job function. If your job function aligns with the test content, you may take the exam.

According to the ANCC,

· The Basic exam (NE-BC) is for leaders “mid-level administrative or higher positions or a nurse management position” charged with managing the daily operations of a unit or service line. Examples of leaders who can test at this level include nurse managers and supervisors (as well as higher level roles such as director). Refer to the ‘Basic’ test content outline to see if you role aligns with the exam content.

· Advanced certification from ANCC (NEA-BC) eligibility states eligibility as holding an “administrative position at the nurse executive level”. Refer to the ‘Advanced’ test content outline to see if you role aligns with the exam content.

Q: I have a Master’s of Science Degree in Healthcare Management. Will that satisfy the requirement for a master’s degree in nursing Administration?

A: No, the Master’s degree must be in Nursing administration.

Q: Do I need to have the 30 Nursing Administration CEs completed before I register to take the review course?

A: No, you do not need to have the CEs before registering for the review course, just before you register to take the exam.

Q: Where can I obtain continuing education hours in Nursing Administration?

A: Here are ideas for nursing leadership/administration CEs

• Taking the review course would provide 14 contact hours so only 16 additional hours would be needed

• You could sign up for professional nurse leader development courses offered through Nursing Education (see attached)

• Lippincott Professional Development https://competency.lww.com/cc/login.do offers 4 courses for 1 CE each in leadership (search for ‘leader’ under electives).

• You may also find some CE-earning programs in MyLearning that could apply.

Q: How do I know which contact hours are accredited/approved?

A: Formally approved continuing education must meet the following criteria:

· Topic must be applicable to nursing leadership/administration

· Continuing nursing education (CNE) approved for nursing contact hours by an accredited provider or approver of nursing continuing education

· Continuing medical education (CME) approved for CME hours

· Sponsored by organizations, agencies, or educational institutions accredited or approved by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), or the Commission on Dietetic Registration

· Provided by one of these accepted agencies:

o American Nurses Association (ANA)

o American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP)

o American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP)

o American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA)

o American College of Nurse Midwives (ACNM)

o American Psychiatric Association (APA)

o American Psychological Association (APA)

o American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA)

Q: If I don’t have enough contact hours, can I combine/convert academic credits for nursing leadership courses to contact hours?

A: Yes.

1 semester credit = 15 contact hours

1 quarter credit = 12.5 contact hours

Q: Can I use my cost center to register for the exam?

A: MedEd is managing the registration process therefore cost centers may not be used to pay for registration fees.
