Robert L. Wears Patient Safety Leadership Award

ABOUT THE AWARD

This award is named in honor of Robert L. Wears, MD, MS, PhD, for his pioneer work in patient safety. Dr. Wears was an emergency medicine physician who transformed the way investigators approach patient safety research. Described as both humble and brilliant, Dr. Wears provided mentorship and guidance to an array of healthcare providers pursuing careers in safety science. Dr. Wears served on the editorial boards of 10 major medical and patient safety journals and was a reviewer for 3 dozen more. An active researcher, he was a professor of emergency medicine at the University of Florida College of Medicine–Jacksonville, and held professorships at the Imperial College School of Medicine in London; the Institute for Health Innovation at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia; and the University of Southern Denmark.

PURPOSE

The Robert L. Wears Patient Safety Award honors a (a) volunteer; (b) individual; (c) team; or (d) organization who has significantly impacted the field of patient safety through critical analysis, research, education or knowledge dissemination.

CRITERIA  

Nominees for the Robert L. Wears Patient Safety Award should be healthcare professionals or entities or teams who: 

  1. Advance the field of patient safety through meaningful research, policy development, quality improvement and/or scholarship 
  2. Develop and mentor future leaders for the long-term work of quality and safety education and practice
  3. Demonstrate excellence in leading interprofessional initiatives designed to improve quality and safety education and advancement of patient safety initiatives in practice and/or academic settings 

SUBMISSION AND DEADLINE

Nominations for the Robert L. Wears Patient Safety Award must be received by January 1, 2021, 11:59 PM EST. Submissions received after the nomination deadline will not be considered. Nominators and the winning Nominee will be notified via email by February 1, 2021.

Nomination letters (500 word maximum) need to include examples of the Nominee’s qualifications per the criteria defined above. Excerpts from the statements will be read when the award is presented at the 2021 QSEN International Virtual Conference.
